Each year thousands of people are injured in snowmobile and ATV accidents. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that each year about 110 people die while riding snowmobiles and 13,400 others seek hospital treatment for injuries sustained in snowmobile accidents. In 2001, 111,700 people (33,000 or them children) were treated in emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries.
Most fatal injuries involving snowmobiles are cause by collisions with trees, wires, bridges, and other snowmobiles. Other deaths occurred when snowmobiles or ATVs rolled pinning victims or entered water falling through ice.
